The chameleon tote is a new Kickstarter project by the sustainable, Canadian design brand Mariclaro. The chameleon tote is upcycled from car seat belts, furniture upholstery and construction tarp all originally destined for the landfill. These totes are lightweight and durable and can be colour-customized to your personal taste. Read on to hear more about this exciting Kickstart project.
The chameleon tote comes in 4 different sizes in order to suit the needs of many different people. It’s called the chameleon as it adapts to many different environments and there are endless colour combinations available to choose from.
The base of the bag is the durable, white construction tarp. You can then choose your preferred colour highlights for each side of the bag. These are furniture upholstery off cuts. Finally you get to select the seat belt colour for the handles and the highlights.
The materials used
The 3 materials used in the chameleon tote are originally destined for the landfill. The construction tarp makes the bag extremely durable. The furniture upholstery adds colour and design appeal to the bag. The seat belts are perfect for strong and comfortable straps. The tarp material is given to Mariclaro from the Farkey Group in Puslinch, Ontario. The furniture upholstery off cuts we are from Spec Furniture in Toronto. The Mariclaro team personally selects and cuts the seatbelts by hand in car wrecking yards.
We love how practical and versatile the chameleon totes are. The large and medium sizes are great as a beach bag or for grocery shopping. The tall size makes a great school bag for carrying binders. The small size is perfect as a purse or for a lunch bag. There are of course many more uses for the bag. Depending on the person, we could see the chameleon tote also working well as a gym bag, laundry bag, diaper bag, craft bag etc. You can even pour ice inside an use it as a cooler!
