Fall is here and that means boot season! We always need more storage for boots and layers, but we want it to look great too. This boot bench is a 2-for-1! It’s the perfect size to sit and put your boots on, and it also houses a storage bin. Read on for the tutorial.
For this project we partnered with Homz, a Chicago-based company with a new eco-friendly line called EcoStorage™. What’s really cool about these products is that they’re made with 99% recycled plastic. Homz reuses an average of 20 million pounds of recycled plastic resin annually, that’s amazing! The Homz EcoStorage™ line is great for the environment and also really practical for storage. We’ve been using these bins and they are super durable and functional. We love the flip lid and how easy it is to stack and store them! These are great bins to use for moving if you’re looking to move.
For this upcycled project, we used reclaimed wood from mattress slats. We’re always keeping an eye out for this kind of wood because it’s already been milled and sanded smooth. That makes it a lot easier to work with.
Here’s how to make this boot bench:
- First, cut your wood to length. Our boot bench is 24″ length x 20″ width x 18″ depth. So we have 19 pieces cut to 20″ for the top, bottom and back and 14 pieces cut to 18″ for the 2 sides. The wood we found is 3 and 1/4″ wide, but that dimension will vary depending on the reclaimed wood you find. Cut four 2x2s to 24″.
- Build the two side walls first. Place two of the 2x2s 18″ apart and then place the 2 outer wood slats on top. Use a square to get them straight. Nail them down. Once you have the outer pieces secured, you can add the five inner slats and space them accordingly. Keep using your square to get everything flush. Repeat this to make your second sidewall.
- Stand the two sides up and place two 20″ wood slats on flush to the outside. Keep using your square! Then work from the outside in to add your five inner slats. Flip it over and repeat the steps to add the bottom. Repeat the process to add the back.
The boot bench will look like this:
To complete the look, stain your boot bench your desired color. We chose a dark espresso color for fall. Allow to dry and then slip your Homz EcoStorage™ bin inside.
We love how simple and effective this boot bench is. This design is modular, so you can build a few, line them up together or use them separately. They’d also work as side tables. One is perfect for a small entryway or to use on your porch. Style them with crates and pumpkins for a perfect, fall rustic look!
