Fashion designer Angela Johnson takes thrifted t-shirts and handcrafts them into one-of-a-kind ball gowns. The indie designer has been making cutting edge, eco-friendly couture since 2003, and has a unique approach to using upcycled material. Says Angela:
I don’t just take a T-shirt and cut off a sleeve or something…I actually treat the shirts as fabric using many shirts and quilt them together before I trace my pattern piece on it. It sometimes takes 20+ shirts to make one garment of mine.
Angela’s creations reflect a sense of humour and bring a sense of fun to high fashion. Customers can supply Angela with their own pre-loved tees, specify colour or logo themes or can leave the process entirely up to her.
