This plastic bottle necklace is cool for a couple of reasons. It creatively utilizes a readily available material, and does it in a way that is totally on trend. Do you love statement necklaces and jewelry? If you said yes than this upcycle is for you.
The tutorial for this plastic bottle necklace comes to us via Marta, an enthusiastic DIYer from Barcelona. Marta loves creating beautiful things from items commonly found. For this upcycled necklace Marta found inspiration from bold Marni creations, as well as the abundantly available variety of plastic bottle colours, thickness and textures.
To make your own plastic bottle necklace you will need: 3 plastic bottles in different colors, a necklace chain, 5 center beads, 5 topper beads, a needle, thimble and transparent thread, as well as a candle, lighter, pliers, permanent marker, scissors, an exacto knife and paper.
Step 1: Using an exacto knife, cut your plastic bottles so that the largest, flat parts remain. Draw stars and circles on a piece of paper and trace them onto the plastic bottle sheets you have created.
Step 2: Cut out the stars and circles and serrate the circle edges for the flower inners. Also cut into the stars’ arms so that they begin to take the shape of flower petals.
Step 3: Using your pliers, hold each flower over the lit candle so that the petals begin to curve. Repeat for flower inners and circles.
Step 4: Using a hot needle poke a hole in the centre of each piece.
Step 5: Sew the flower petals, inners and circles together with the beads as shown. Then poke more holes in the outer parts of the petals so that you can connect the flowers using links from your necklace chain.
Step 6: Attach everything together and add on your necklace chain. You now have a trendy plastic bottle necklace!
